VeneersMayNotBetheBestOptionforYourTeenagersTeeth

Just like adults, teenagers experience chipped, stained or disfigured teeth. And during a life stage where issues with appearance can be acutely painful, these defects call out for a solution.

And, there is one: porcelain veneers. These thin wafers of custom-made porcelain are bonded to the front of teeth to cover dental flaws. They’re one of the least invasive—and most affordable—methods for smile enhancement.

There is one caveat, though: The affected teeth will most likely need alteration. Veneers can look bulky when bonded directly to teeth, so we compensate for this by removing some of the surface enamel. This changes the tooth permanently, to the point that it will always require a veneer or some other form of restoration.

But although this may be a minor issue for an adult, it could pose a problem for a teenager. That’s because the pulp, the innermost layer of a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, is larger in a younger adolescent tooth than in an older adult tooth. Because of its size, it’s closer to the tooth’s surface. During enamel reduction for veneers on a young tooth, this could lead to inadvertent nerve damage. If that happens, the tooth may need a root canal treatment to preserve it.

If the adolescent tooth needing a “facelift” has already been root canaled or sustained significant structural damage, then altering it for veneers may not be too concerning. Likewise, if the teeth are smaller than normal, the bulkiness of a veneer may actually improve appearance and not require alteration. We’ll need to examine a young patient first before making any recommendations.

There are also alternatives to veneers for improving smile appearance. Enamel staining could be enhanced temporarily with teeth whitening. Small chips can be repaired with bonded dental material, or in skilled hands be used to “build” a veneer one layer at a time with no enamel reduction. Although not as durable as regular veneers, these bonding techniques could buy time until the tooth is more mature for veneers.

Whichever path we take, there are effective ways to transform a teenager’s flawed tooth. And that can make for an even better smile.

The benefits of veneers are numerous, but often their biggest use is how they can give you a brand new smile by addressing cosmetic veneersconcerns such as stains or discolorations. Another benefit is how they look completely natural—a feat possible thanks to their customization and how they are made from porcelain, a material that fantastically replicates the appearance of natural tooth enamel. Your dentists at Sudbury Family Dental Care in Sudbury, MA, Dr. Maria Elizondo Marinescu, Dr. Sorin Marinescu, and their associates, use veneers to rejuvenate their patines' smiles—read on to learn more!

What are Veneers?

Veneers are wafer-thin covers bonded to the front surface of teeth with cosmetic imperfections. Different materials can be used to create veneers, but porcelain is a preferred choice because it looks so much like natural tooth enamel. Additionally, the shape, color, and size of porcelain veneers can be easily customized for a completely natural look and perfect fit. These restorations are permanently cemented to the teeth so that they remain securely in place at all times, even when eating. Once in place, your veneers will look just like your natural teeth!

Benefits

Veneers from our Sudbury office can help correct or conceal a variety of cosmetic imperfections, including:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Uneven or rough surfaces on teeth
  • Teeth that are slightly misshaped
  • Small spaces or gaps between teeth

Functionality and Care

Veneers are extremely functional and can last a very long time with proper care. Since veneers are cemented directly to the teeth, you can bite into your favorite foods with little risk of the veneers coming loose of falling off. In addition to functioning like natural teeth, you can care for them the same way, as well. At-home care necessitates simple brushing and flossing, just as you have always done! Proper care of your veneers also includes maintaining regular visits to the dentist who can check that your veneers are holding up properly.

Cosmetic dentistry beautifies a person's smile and boosts self-esteem. Your dentists in Sudbury, MA, provide their patients with the cosmetic dentistryprocedures they need to look their best and experience a new level of confidence—read below to learn more!

Veneers are wafer-thin pieces of porcelain or plastic, bonded on the surface of unsightly teeth. At our Sudbury office, we use veneers to adjust patients' teeth color or shape.

Some advantages include:

  • Concealing a variety of issues, including uneven teeth surfaces, chips, discolorations, and crooked tooth placement
  • They need little to no anesthesia during the procedure
  • They have a long life expectancy and great color stability
  • They are highly resistant to permanent staining from coffee, tea, and smoking

Teeth Whitening is achieved through two methods:

  • In-Office Whitening: Your dentist will cover your gums and tooth-root surface with a plastic retractor to keep your lips and cheeks away from the surface of your teeth. The dentist then applies extra strength hydrogen-peroxide and leaves it on your teeth for an hour.

  • Take-Home Whitening: This method is sometimes more convenient, but won't necessarily give you the same results. Your doctor will give you custom-made plastic mouth trays (one for the top jaw and the other for the bottom jaw) and gel to apply on your teeth. You will then need to leave the trays in your mouth for about an hour. A single application generally won't produce the optimal results, so you will need to repeat the process until you are satisfied with your smile.

Tooth-colored Fillings also known as composite resin, are used during dental bonding procedures. The composite is made of plastic resin and a filler of finely ground glass-like particles. These fillings are used to fix chips, cracks, dental discoloration, irregularly-shaped teeth, fractures, and decays.
